On the 9th of February we met and spent the day at Antelle's Bee Park. This allowed us to get together and further discuss the future of the Cyprus Buzzy Bees project. It was also an excellent opportunity for those of us from the north, who had not previously done so, to visit and get to know the Bee Park.
Antonis was on hand to act as host and provided a tour of the facility, showing the wonderful work he has done there over the years.
In November 2024 a five-day course, designed for newcomers to beekeeping was held at the Almond Hotel. We were lucky enough to have three tutors from the UK - Deborah Cambell (Master Beekeeper), Jim Liness (Apiary Manager) and Steve Troll (Education Officer), who made the trip over specially. Also, from the south of the island, our friends Jilly Ellson (Beginners Representative) and Tony Davenport (Paphos Beekeeper) leant support along with our own Ahmet Asik.
The course covered the basics of beekeeping including lessons on the physiology and life of bees, swarm management, beehive inspections and honey harvesting. On the final day, the students got to "get there hands dirty", by inspecting the hives in the Almond grounds, and learning how to construct beehive frames.
The week was an immense success and enjoyed by all the students who deserve credit for their own contributions and hard work. Well done all!
Following on from our successful Bee Course Taster in April, a second session was organised for September. Once again, the day was an enormous success.
The day incorporated some videos and a fun bee quiz. Those attending were able to see, at first hand, the process of extracting honey from frames which had been taken from the hives that day.
The first of our Bee Course Taster days was very well attended. Attendees were provided with basic information about bees, especially the honeybee, and how they live, and how important they are for our environment.
The morning was spent in the classroom, where Jilly Ellson and Tony Davenport were on hand to give us the benefit of their experience. In the afternoon we were able to time spent in the apiary in the grounds of The Almond.
The feedback was positive, with attendees saying they had been enjoyable, interesting, and informative.
